DynaView Safeguards Panama Ports

Bay Shore, NY – IPVideo Corporation’s DynaView system has been selected to safeguard one of the world’s largest sea ports. Panama Ports Company (PPC) operates two ports in Panama and is a member of the Hutchison Port Holdings, which operates two-hundred and fifty-five berths in forty-four ports around the world.

These port and terminal operations serve the Panama Canal, the primary link for the transportation of goods between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. “The selection of the DynaView system was certainly a critical decision, due to the strategic nature of the port operations”, said Juan Delgado, Vice President of Multitek Pacifico the system integrator.

DynaView is megapixel certified, which assures PPC that the system is capable of reliably capturing, recording and managing large resolution images. “The combination of megapixel cameras and DynaView provide significant advantages over other surveillance systems on the market,” states David Antar, President of IPVideo Corporation.

After a detailed analysis of the ports surveillance requirements, selecting the DynaView project designed by Multitek Pacifico was an easy decision for PPC. It was obvious that DynaView would meet or exceed the ports high performance requirements, integrated intelligence, video recording and management, reliable design and high resolution imagery and therefore was the best and most cost effective solution to protect their employees, port operations, and cargo.

“We were used to the grainy, blurry images of CCTV," said Michael Hernandez, CIO of PPC. "When we first saw [the camera] images, they were so clear it was like watching a DVD. That sort of quality has become necessary in our industry." 

The DynaView system helps lower the risk of theft, vandalism, and injury. The ability to recognize and use incoming video and audio signals as triggers to control system function, send e-mail alerts with images attached, provide routing of video display to specific security consoles certainly assists with the security process.

School Security a Priority.

Jefferson County Community College in Watertown, NY began instituting a four step security upgrade aimed at increasing student safety.

After the tragedy at the Virginia Tech Campus, Community colleges began to serious look at ways of notifying and protecting their students.

Jefferson County Community College in Watertown, NY began instituting a four step security upgrade aimed at increasing student safety. JCC chose Wells Communications to help design and implement three out of the four steps.

The first step was to install a robust network backbone to allow the campus to focus on immediate and future needs. The Campus IT Department connected all of the buildings with Fiber links.

The second step was to enhance the Closed Circuit TV system initially to cover the outside parking lots. The College decided to use an IP based camera system. The decision was easily made with the use of fiber backbone the college installed throughout the campus. Instead of long cable runs and installation of cumbersome conduit, wherever the college wanted to have a camera installed, there would be only a short run to a power box and one cable run to the Network Closet. Installing IP cameras also decreased the amount of time installers needed to be in the classroom buildings and inconvenience staff and students. A network Video recorder is housed in a secure building connected to the College network behind a firewall. All viewing is done at normal networked PC stations with secure internet access by appropriate college officials. The System is easily upgradeable to add more cameras and the system is smart enough to add analytics.

The third step of the upgrade was to find a system of notification in the event of any type of serious incident. At present, the college has no form of notification to students inside or outside of the buildings. Again JCC chose Wells Communications to help design and implement a mass notification system. Wells received an order for a Federal Signal Electronic Siren system. This system allows the College to send a Loud Tone(s) to alert students, on Campus, of a forthcoming voice message. This message can be a canned message or a live message giving them instructions to follow. Different Siren tones can be used for different situations. The Federal system also is scalable to allow for integration of network notification, as well as, cell phone and pager notification and interior intercom type notification systems.

The final upgrade was to the two-way radio system by allowing multiple talk groups and interoperability to local resources (city and county fire and law enforcement). The College again chose Wells Communications to help design and Implement a comprehensive communications solution. JCC chose the Motorola MOTOTRBO digital TDMA radio system to provide high quality secure communications between the Campus security and the maintenance departments. The MOTOTRBO system allows JCC to utilize TDMA technology to have one repeater provide two distinct private talk groups. This system also allows supervisors to carry on private one to one conversations or create different group calling. The College will use their old analog repeater to crossband to local resources. This separate channel on the new MOTOTRBO radio will talk analog to the resources while still having digital communications within the college, all using just one radio.

The final two steps will be installed by the end of February. The College Security Office is eager to have more tools to help them keep their students safe and secure.

Eighty people attended an IP video workshop in Bay Shore, NY

Representatives from Toshiba, Alcatel-Lucent, Intelli-vision, and IPVideo Corporation gave presentations ranging from a basic introduction to a much more advanced technical discussion regarding the application of IP technology to physical surveillance.  Topics included selecting IP cameras that will meet your requirements; the implications of using advanced network switching hardware, an introduction to video analytics, as well as a discussion of the overall advantages of an IP-based network centric surveillance system.

You guys provided some good info from many different technology partners that are needed to bring a comprehensive IP CCTV solution together.”  And Daniel Valles of T & R Alarm Company commented, “I learned a lot, looking forward to learning more”.

New York Magnet School Leverages Network Backbone For Cost-Effective IP-Network Monitoring & Surveillance Solution

 

Background

The Mount Vernon City School District is located in the southeastern corner of beautiful Westchester County, NY, operating 15 schools with an enrollment of over 10,000 students.  The A.B. Davis Middle School is a district magnet school that serves 867 students, 75 teachers, 5 administrators, 4 counselors, a psychologist and 30 support staff members.

To safeguard its students and staff, A.B. Davis Middle School subscribes to a Zero Tolerance policy to violence, drugs and gangs, and they have made a concerted effort to establish themselves as a “safe harbor” for learning. As part of this initiative, they used the recent summer break to install an IP Network Video Surveillance System – the first in Mt Vernon City School District’s history. By leveraging their existing network infrastructure and installing IP Video Corporation’s Enterprise Surveillance System coupled with Toshiba network cameras, the school saved thousands of dollars while benefiting from IP Network video’s scalability, Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) capabilities and remote management. Eliminated was the need for additional Ethernet cable pulls, complex coaxial runs, outdated analog equipment and expensive electrical rework.

Project Goals

The goal of the A.B Davis project was an integrated, full-featured video surveillance program for real-time monitoring both inside and outside the school. Administrators also wanted a system that would be easy to access by authorized users, and delivered the greatest value for the dollars spent, and that could be expanded upon to meet future needs.

The district worked with integrator A Technology Solutions, Inc. to install the IP Network Surveillance System. 

“The goals of the A.B Davis project can be summed up as accessibility, affordability and scalability,” notes David Antar, President of A Technology Solutions. “Immediately we saw the cost-savings and performance enhancing potential of the school’s network infrastructure.  The school district’s IT team were very enthusiastic about an IP Network-based solution.”

Getting It Done

The district’s IT department configured a separate VLAN infrastructure for the IP Video System to better manage network utilization.  An IP Video Corporation Visual Sentry NVR boasting a massive four-terabytes of storage tapped into the network’s capacity.  The Visual Sentry NVR software makes it possible for any workstation on the network to be utilized as a viewing client for monitoring live video or retrieving archives. A security console with eight rack-mounted LCD 19-inch monitors is located in the Security Operations Center (SOC) deep inside A.B. Davis Middle School.  At the security console, up to 64 cameras can be viewed simultaneously on each monitor. In addition, live video and recorded archives can be viewed via the Internet with remote viewing client software.

The NVR is located in the facility’s server room, providing a centralized secure location to capture and store images.  As future needs arise, additional image storage and viewing modules can easily be added to the system.  For instance, A Technology Solutions is in discussions to bring video access to local police at their headquarters via the Internet or a wireless network from a police car.

TOSHIBA CAMERAS USED

In selecting a supplier for the 104 IP Network cameras to install, A Technology Solutions chose Toshiba. The decision was based on performance, value and most importantly, the Toshiba cameras’ ability to be easily integrated into IP Video Corporations Visual Sentry NVR. 

Inside the school, 94 Toshiba IK-WR01A vandal-resistant network domes were installed in cafeterias, hallways and classrooms, while another 10 Toshiba IK-WB21A PTZ-style network cameras were mounted within heated enclosures outside the school’s parameter to watch parking lots and schoolyards.

The Toshiba IK-WR01A combines a rugged vandal-resistant design with hybrid network/analog capabilities, super-sharp 480 TV resolution and a 30 frame-per-second frame rate. But what really made the camera stand out to A Technology Solutions was its 802.af PoE support, requiring only a single Ethernet cable to deliver both communications and power. The result is better placement flexibility and lower installation costs while facilitating the use of uninterruptible power supply with the camera, so that video monitoring can continue in the event of a power failure.

“The Toshiba camera’s PoE support saved Mt. Vernon School District thousands of dollars in electrical hardwiring,” notes Antar.

A Technology Solutions was equally enthusiastic about the Toshiba IK-WB21A that offers ultra-fast Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) capability with 22X optical zoom, razor-sharp SXVGA resolution (1280 x 960) and a slot for a removable SD memory card, allowing for an added “at-the-camera” recording option that works in conjunction with an alarm.

The Toshiba cameras can be programmed and operated using the Visual Sentry NVR, with options such as frame rate, motion detection or resolution being individually set for each camera.
